North Yorkshire school children have created a giant poppy to mark Remembrance Day.

The children of Trinity Academy in Middleton Tyas, near Richmond, along with teaching staff at the school, came together to make the shape of a giant poppy.

Wearing their red school uniform, with teaching staff in black to form the centre of the poppy, they made the shape of the flower of remembrance on their school playing field.

The image was captured by Ali Bell, from Gekko Creative, whose children attend the school.

Headteacher Debbie McLean said: "We are always looking for interesting ways to engage our children in learning about Remembrance Day. We felt this was a simple but fitting way for our whole school community to come together to remember those who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world, and to pay tribute to service personnel and their families who sacrificed so much."

The event was organised by the school, in collaboration with the Friends of Trinity Academy Eppleby Forcett and Middleton Tyas.

Poppies have become a symbol for those who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world. Every November The Poppy Appeal, run by The Royal British Legion, raises money through the sale of poppies, which goes to support both serving and ex serving personnel and their families. This year’s appeal includes a poppy which is made from 100 per cent paper. Find out more at www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/poppy-appeal
