People are being invited to make a contribution to history at the last 2023 Saltburn Mosaic Workshop.
It takes place on Saturday, October 21 from 10am to 12pm, by the Mosaic Wall near Saltburn Station. Members of the community can help to restore the fourth mosaic for two minutes, 20 minutes, or even two hours.
The Saltburn Mosaics are a frieze of five mosaics on the station-facing wall of the town's Sainsbury’s store. Each mosaic presents key features from the Saltburn landscape.
An integral part of Saltburn’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations in 2011, chairman Councillor Philip Thomson raised funds to commission artists Helen Gaunt and Derek Mosey to create the Mosaic Wall.
But, over time, water damage severely affected the mosaic foundations. Successful fundraising to restore the mosaics began in 2021 led by Cllr Thomson, who also organised the 2022 mosaic restoration workshops. Three of the five mosaics are now beautifully restored.
Work on the fourth mosaic has continued this year and will be unveiled on Saturday, October 28. The restoration of the fifth and final mosaic has been rescheduled for next year.
