SOME of Europe’s most distinguished musicians head for Ripon International Festival in August.
The festival starts on August 24 with the Wihan Quartet of Prague in a rhapsodic programme featuring the famous Dvorak 'American’ Quartet, the sublime Beethoven ‘Cavatina’ and popular works by Smetana and Janacek.
Cellist Raphael Wallfisch returns in a trio with violinist Hagai Shaham and pianist Arnon Erez, to play Beethoven’s Trio Op 1 No 3 – a work of intense pathos and lyricism, contrasting with haunting, hypnotic Ravel and soulful Grieg on Friday, September 15.
Award-winning baroque artists, Tabea Debus recorders, Reiko Ichise viola da gamba and lutenist Toby Carr will perform in the much-loved mediaeval manor Markenfield Hall on Tuesday September 12 and Wednesday, September 13.
Janusz Piotrowicz, artistic director and conductor has chosen a dazzling programme for his gala concert at Ripon Cathedral on Saturday, September 30, with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, featuring Beethoven’s explosive, exhilarating ‘little symphony’ No. 8; Samuel Coles comes from France to play the sparkling Mozart Flute Concerto No. 2; then Schubert Symphony 9 ‘The Great’ with its mesmerising, relentless rhythmic momentum ends this special occasion.
Janusz is renowned for his revelatory, high octane performances, in which he commits to memory every detail of the score, using his rare interpretive gifts and supreme conducting technique.
A variety of other events include Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, among the world’s top ten brass bands, folk bands, violin and guitar Duo Diez playing Spanish favourites, harp music, A Room of One’s Own based on Virginia Woolf’s famous book by Dyad Productions, Lempen Puppets, comedy with the London Revue Company, Red Priest Baroque Extravaganza, whose ‘superhuman’ performances have earned them a world-wide following.
