A village has rejuvenated its traditional Barrel Push event, with the competition scheduled for this Bank Holiday Monday.

The Barrel Push in Finghall, near Leyburn, has raised more than £100,000 for local and national charities over the years.

It has been running since 1986, and sees contestants pushing an 18-gallon beer barrel uphill on a stamina-sapping course.

Along with the Barrel Push there will be a village fete including side stalls, a classic car display, and vintage fire engines.

This year’s competition will be held in a field to the rear of the Queen's Head pub on Monday, May 29 at 1.30pm.

The event is run as a time trial, with trophies up for grabs in several categories. Children over 12, men and women may enter on the day.

There will be live entertainment throughout the afternoon, with the village’s main street lined with stalls and attractions.

Refreshments in the form of cream teas and a barbecue will be on offer.

This year the chosen charities are The Addington Fund, Golden Tots Crakehall and Huntington’s Disease Association. Additionally, a number of local charities, including the Swaledale Mountain Rescue, will receive donations. For additional information search on Facebook for Finghall Barrel Push.
