Just in case you can’t make it down to London for the Coronation the North Yorkshire market town of Thirsk is awash with right royal decorations after the yarn bombers descended.

From Beefeaters to impressive King Charles 111 and Queen Camilla’s the town has been adorned in regal style. Post boxes, seats and bollards have all been crowned with knitted figures.

Irene Marwood, one of the organisers said 30 members of the Yarn Bombers had been involved working away with their needles and wool to create the fabulous figures.

Over the weekend they started to appear in the town centre and have been well received by visitors and locals alike.

One said: “Absolutely amazing work, thank you for the joy your displays give.” Jean Liversidge added: “Your displays are always amazing. You are all very talented ladies and a credit to Thirsk.”

Another local resident applauded the display adding: “Wow, Just wow, you’re all so clever, your work brings joy to my heart Well done you clever talented lot, your work is amazing.”

The Thirsk Yarn Bombers are now renowned around the country with photographs of their work sent by enthusiasts all over Britain, and as far afield as Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and India.

They originally launched in 2015 when the Tour De Yorkshire was due to come through Thirsk. Originally the Thirsk Knitters got together to create a few flags, eventually over 300 were involved in knitting and crocheting huge numbers of decorations. Dressed in balaclavas and dark clothing they descended on the town in the night yarn bombing the centre. Their work has carried on ever since attracting huge crowds to see their latest creations.

A sperate group, The Rogues, have added new displays with life size models of King Charles 111 and Queen Camilla at what they call Rogues Corner near the roundabout between Topcliffe Road and Station Road.

The Yarn Bombers say the current display will stay up until May 28.
