Enterprising customers and the management of the Voyager pub on The Avenue in Guisborough had a double celebration last Friday when they held their Gallon Walk.

The walk was in aid of the Comic Relief and Chloe’s Story charities, and this year, because the event was held on St Patrick’s Day, it had an Irish theme.

Nearly 60 volunteers turned up at the Voyager, and were suitably refreshed before boarding a bus, which took them eight miles to Brotton for a visit to the Railway Arms.

The group then set off to walk back to the Voyager by calling in at a further six pubs, the Longacre and the Wharton Arms at Skelton, the Miners Arms at New Skelton, the Top House at Boosbeck, the Retriever at Charltons and the Anchor at Guisborough, on the way before finishing at the Voyager for a final drink, hence the title of the Gallon Walk.

Chloe’s Story is a charity to support a mum-of-three Chloe, who fell down the stairs after a seizure, and was diagnosed with a stage four glioblastoma brain tumour.

The family have since discovered a form of hydrogen therapy, which is not available on the NHS, and can prolong life. A guide price for a machine to enable Chloe to receive this treatment at home is estimated at £2,500 and the walk is aimed at raising enough money to start this treatment for Chloe.

Each of the participants in the walk had to raise £50 to pay for the refreshments en route and provide a donation to the fund. Any further donations can be sent to the Voyager to be included in the final total.

Fortunately, the weather smiled on the walkers before returning to the Voyager.
