Railway enthusiasts from across Britain are expected at the Wensleydale Railway's three-day Model Railway event over May Bank Holiday weekend from April 29 to 30.

Leeming Bar Station will be hosting the popular model railway show. With layouts of various gauges on display, the railway is planning to have its entire heritage diesel fleet operating at various times over the weekend.

There will be a special treat for heritage diesel locomotive fans with a one-off, special double-headed train to Leyburn pulled by its class 37 and class 33 locomotives.

Organisers say this year’s model railway show will be bigger than last year and take place inside the engine shed at Leeming Bar, and also in a marquee set up in the car park. A range of layouts will be on display, from N to O gauge. These will be displayed alongside standard gauge locomotives, including the ex-Tyne and Wear locomotive No. WL 4 and a partly rebuilt steam locomotive.

A spokesperson added: “This family-friendly event will have something for everyone. In addition to a range of children’s activities there will be children’s rides on a 5¼ inch-gauge steam and diesel railway operated by the Leeds Society of Model and Experimental Engineers over 145 feet of specially set up track in the car park. A traction engine will be in steam and on display in the car park and visitors will have the opportunity to drive a class 03 diesel shunter locomotive for only £5.”

The event will be open from 10am to 4.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday and 10am to 4pm on Monday. Tickets will be available just for entry to the model railway show, an all-day train rover ticket, hop on and hop off where you like, with entry to the show, or travel-only on all trains.

Tickets are available on the website at https://wensleydale-railway.co.uk/ or in-person at the event. Refreshments will also be available. Trains will also be operating throughout the weekend between Scruton and Leyburn with all-day rover tickets available.
