Richmond MP Rishi Sunak says he has received assurances from national and local health bosses about the future of the town's Friary Community Hospital after concerns were raised last week.

As reported in last week's D&S Times, staff and patients were moved out six months ago following a problem with the building's water pressure, but dates for them to return have been repeatedly cancelled.

Last month the reopening of the hospital’s Victoria ward was delayed because further work needed to be carried out.

In letters to Mr Sunak, NHS Property Services and the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust gave updates on the additional repairs required. The earlier work had revealed the need to upgrade ceilings and replace fire doors.

Mr Sunak said: “I have been assured the Victoria ward will re-open as soon as this additional work is completed. I am awaiting a date for completion of the extra work but I am pleased to hear that when patients return it will be to a much improved ward environment.”

Day services provided within the Friary Hospital building, including the GP practice and outpatient clinics, are unaffected by the works.

The hospital cares for patients following acute illness, offers rehabilitation after general surgery and orthopaedic surgery, and carries out palliative care, as well as monitoring of new drug therapy or convalescence to support discharge plans.

One supporter, who asked not to be named, said: “How can there suddenly be so much more work? Our biggest fear is that we will lose this community hospital which is loved by so many people, and has looked after so many local residents and families."
