Emergency services were called to reports of a fire this week after a blaze broke out at a County Durham wholesale retailer.

Emergency services attended George Bolam Foods in Sedgefield on Wednesday (November 9) after reports of a fire breaking out.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman from the North East Ambulance Service, said: “We received a call to 999 at 15:56 to reports of a fire at George Bolam Food Limited on Salters Lane in Sedgefield.

"We sent four Hazardous Area Response Teams and a clinical team leader to support fire colleagues.  No one required treatment and all of our teams stood down at the scene.”

Meanwhile, a local historian who witnessed the blaze, said: “I first noticed it at 3:55pm and saw the staff from Sainsbury’s next door cordon off the petrol station and the fire brigade and ambulances arrived about half an hour later.”

Onlookers were able to spot billowing smoke and bright flames from the rear of the building nearby Sainsburys, as the fire continued to rage.

Residents showed their shock online as images of the fire hit social media, with many hoping nothing serious had happened.

One said: "Hope everyone is ok and not to much damage to Bolman's"

While another concerned resident said: "Hope all staff are out ok."

Pictures of the blaze were captured at the scene by a Northern Echo reader, half an hour before ambulance and fire services arrived.
