Buses, cars and vans will be faced with disruption as a North East road will close for two weeks over the weekend.

The section of Hall Drive between its junctions with Acklam Road and Bewley Grove in Middlesbrough will be shut from Friday, August 5.

Middlesbrough Council has confirmed this is to allow by Northern Gas Network for essential gas main renewal works.

Affected traffic will be diverted via Rievaulx Drive, Tollesby Road, Green Lane and Acklam Road whilst the closure is in place.

During the closure of Hall Drive the Stagecoach 13/13A Service between Middlesbrough town centre and Stainton Village and Hemlington will run along its normal route as far as Emerson Avenue.

It will then operate on a one-way loop via Tollesby Road and Glendale Road, returning to Emerson Avenue from where it will run non-stop via Green Lane and Acklam Road until it re-joins its normal route south of Hall Drive.

This means that only the bus stops on Hall Drive itself will be out of action while the temporary road closure is in place.

The same arrangement will operate in reverse for buses heading from Hemlington to the town centre.

Hall Drive is programmed to reopen to traffic on Monday, August 22, at which point the 13/13A Service will revert to its normal route.

A Middlesbrough Council Spokesman said: “We have worked closely with Northern Gas Networks to ensure that their works take place during the school summer holidays, as this will minimise the impact of the closure on the travelling public.

“We have also worked closely with Stagecoach to ensure that the impact on bus passengers is reduced to a minimum.

“The completion of the gas main renewal works will allow planned carriageway resurfacing works on Hall Drive to be carried out later during the current financial year.

“These works – which will also require a temporary road closure – will be programmed to coincide with school holidays to reduce their impact to a minimum.

“Further details will be announced beforehand to allow road users to plan their journeys.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank the travelling public for their patience and understanding.”
