A six-year-old girl had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when she escorted the Lionesses onto the field before their historic win.

Summer Burton, from Northallerton, was an official player escort mascot at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 final on Sunday.

The momentous day came after she won a prize draw by sponsor Euronics to become a mascot in the day.

Nicky Burton, Summer’s mother and owner of Maxwell’s of Northallerton, said the day had “been a dream.”

Finding out just a week before the game, Ms Burton said it had been “emotional.”

She added: “What an experience it has been for Summer, my generation couldn’t even play football at school so it's just so special for me too.”

Leading up to the event the youngster was “a little nervous” because she didn’t “understand how big it was.”

Ms Burton added: “We dropped her off and then left her with a person and they worked with her over the day with the other girls.

“They also played some games and got to know each other which was nice.”

Although she was nervous Summer was able to make friends with some of the other girls, one of the perks of the occasion, along with a free football kit.

Ms Burton added: “After they bought them back they let them stay after and watch the game so they didn’t miss it.”

The six-year-old, who attends South Otterington Primary School, was also the youngest there and she was still “coming to terms with at all.”

Ms Burton added: “She really loved it and for me it was amazing to see it all the people there as well.

“She has the memories and that’s the main thing, for her to be there during such a historic moment for women is amazing.”

The day was a monumental day for women Ms Burton stressed adding that it was really good to see “lots of girls and young girls in the crowd.”

She added: “It was really good from a woman’s point of view and was very refreshing to have women in the sport.”

Although Summer is young, the Burton family aim to keep newspaper articles and pictures from the event for the future, so she can “look back on the day and remember it.”
