After the excitement of a royal visit on the first day of The Great Yorkshire Show on Tuesday (July 13), the second day kicked off at Harrogate Showground on Wednesday with a lot to live up to - and it definitely delivered.

With the sun shining brightly, thousands more people travelled to the four-day, sold-out event, which celebrates agriculture, food and country.

Despite The Princess Royal turning up to the 136th instalment of the show on Tuesday, there were still plenty of famous faces come Wednesday, with popstar-turned farmer, JB Gill, entertaining the crowds, alongside Peter Wright from The Yorkshire Vet.

Eight years ago, the JLS boy band member set up a farm in the countryside, where he lives with his wife Chloe and two children, and produces award-winning KellyBronze turkeys and free-range Tamworth pork.

Alongside the famous faces, the second day was all about celebrating the contribution of farmers across the north of England to conservation and environmental improvement - when the prestigious Tye Trophy award was presented.

Now in its thirteenth year, the award covers farms in six regions of the north of England, with a regional winner from each and one overall trophy winner.

This year’s winner was Jamie Wood of Pendwick Farm, Alnwick, who received the trophy from the President of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Margaret Chapman, at a special ceremony on the President’s Lawn.

Jamie also took the regional award for Northumberland.

Yorkshire Agricultural Society Chief Executive Allister Nixon said: “This competition demonstrates to the farming industry and the general public how farming can combine the twin goals of sustainable food production and looking after our land and environment.

"It encourages all farmers with examples of what is already happening around the north and acts as an inspiration of what can be achieved.”
