As the first day starts to wind down at The Great Yorkshire Show - the opening day has had everything from royal family members to thousands of people and from 8500 animals to famous faces.

Despite the 'changeable' weather that brought a combination of rain and sun to the day – it didn’t deter the thousands that flocked to Harrogate Showground.

With 140,000 people expected over the four-day event, which runs until Friday (July 15), and carrying on from last year’s Covid-impacted event, it was no surprise that the show categories and main arena was packed with people in what has become a fully sold-out affair.

Throughout the day, there were visits from the guest of honour The Princess Royal (Princess Anne), as well as familiar, household names, such as The Yorkshire Vet’s Peter Wright and BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson, alongside the host of the show, Christine Talbot.

Over the next three days, the event is expected to see yet more bumper crowds visit the Showground – but for now, here are The Northern Echo’s photos of the day taken by our photographer, Sarah Caldecott.
