A HISTORIC regiment is set to parade through Darlington.
The Rifles, the successors to the Durham Light Infantry, will be taking part in the Freedom of the Borough parade in the town on Friday, July 1.
The regiment was awarded the honour – which is the highest civic distinction – in 2010, when thousands of people turned out to watch the parade in the town centre.
On July 1, the Rifles Band and Bugles will be welcomed to the town by Darlington Mayor councillor Anne-Marie Curry.
She said: “The Rifles have a long association with Darlington and we’re delighted to welcome them back. The parade will give us all an opportunity to express our thanks to those who serve as troops.”
Residents, schools, businesses and other organisations based in the town are being encouraged to turn out to show their support as the regiment marches by.
Brigadier Mark Wilson MBE, of The Rifles said: “Although The Rifles is a nationally recruited regiment we never forget our roots. We are honoured to hold the Freedom of Darlington and proud to have riflemen from Darlington serving within our ranks.”
The Rifles are coming to Darlington on Friday, July 1, and starting at 11am, the regiment will march down High Row to the Market Square.
