Bosses of a historic Darlington cinema have revealed the final film it will screen, ahead of its closure next week.

It was revealed last week that the historic cinema on Northgate would be closing its doors for the final time on June 30, after more than 80 years.

The closure puts the future of the historic building in doubt and 14 staff are said to be affected, with Odeon saying it is ‘working hard’ to find them alternative jobs.

The cinema operator has now revealed the screening times for the final week at its Luxe cinema in Darlington.

There will be two films showing at the same time to bring an end to the cinema’s run.

Elvis, a film exploring the life and music of Elvis Presley, will be shown at 7.45pm with a running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Top Gun: Maverick, the popular sequel starring Tom Cruise, will be shown at 8pm in screen three with a running time of 2 hours and 11 minutes.

Lightyear and Jurassic World: Dominion will also both have showings on June 30.

Speaking after news of the closure, one staff member said: “We are all gutted. They told us we would be closing and we would all be losing our jobs.”

The cinema was opened in December 1938 as The Regal cinema at a cost of £50,000 and ran as the ABC, the Canon and MGM before being taken over by Odeon.

An Odeon spokesperson told The Northern Echo last week: “We are disappointed to announce the closure of our Darlington cinema.”

“This decision was not taken lightly and followed a thorough review of all possible options.

“We are hugely proud and appreciative of the hard work from the ODEON Darlington team over the years and we will be consulting with each colleague to support them.”
