Residents fear for the future after housebuilder Taylor Wimpey began work building a housing estate on their doorstep.

Floodwater recently poured into the gardens of several properties in Bedale Road, Aiskew, in North Yorkshire because of the works being carried out at Beaumont Gate.

The housebuilder apologised after being contacted by the Darlington and Stockton Times. Residents said they had heard nothing from the builders after complaining for weeks and asking for information about the height of groundworks for the site, which already reach above their fences.

Resident Dave Brown, 74, said: “It seems to us that Taylor Wimpey are not taking any notice of anything that is being said and just ploughing on regardless. We need this resolving as soon as possible before it is too late. It is definitely a case of ‘Big Brother’ riding rough shod over the little people.”

Mags and Bob Frazer, 65 and 68 respectively, said: “We have been waiting for two months for them to contact us since we started to become seriously alarmed about the height of the works. There must be a plan somewhere which tells the workers what needs to be done, and yet we are being totally ignored. The water just cascaded down our garden we were really worried it would get into the house.”

Residents said had been told bungalows would be built with a footpath alongside their homes, but have since discovered it could be two storey houses. It is understood work was stopped on part of the site and householders are awaiting further updates about enforcement from Hambleton District Council.

A council spokesperson said: “The council are currently working with Taylor Wimpey to address the concerns of local residents about the levels of the proposed development. The three plots closest to the neighbouring properties are proposed as bungalows and not two storey houses. There is one unit further west that is a two storey dwelling, which is separated by public open space and a footpath.

“The council understand that the flooding was owing to significant rainfall and temporary works have been undertaken to prevent a recurrence. The design of the final drainage solution on site has been undertaken with input from the lead local flood authority in order to ensure that existing and proposed dwellings are protected from flooding.”

A spokesperson from Taylor Wimpey said: “We understand the concerns of residents and would like to assure them that, in line with the approved planning permission from Hambleton Council, the homes closest to the neighbouring properties on Bedale Road will be bungalows.

“We sincerely apologise to residents who were affected by the flooding which was caused by an extreme storm last month, and can confirm that we have put measures in place to ensure this does not happen again. We have been in contact with a number of residents and we are committed to keeping them informed as our work on site continues.”
