THE first signs for a new town centre restaurant have appeared as it moves closer to opening inside a disused premises.

The former Royal Bank of Scotland bank, on Blackwellgate, is being transformed into a new restaurant and flats.

The building has stood empty since the bank closed in 2018.

Now, four years later, work is underway to breathe new life into the dormant building, which fronts the pedestrianised shopping area in the town centre.

A change of use proposal to convert the former bank to a mixed use restaurant/hot food takeaway on the ground floor and two three-bedroom flats above was approved by Darlington Council last year.

And a new sign with "halo illuminated lettering" on the building has appeared.

The new restaurant, Yoby, is set to offer fried chicken and noodles to the town centre crowd.

The new site is due to open later this year.
