BIG things are happening for the town of Northallerton as the area has undergone, and is set to undergo, six new major developments – and some of them are worth millions of pounds.

We’ve pulled together a list of six major developments happening, and set to happen, in the North Yorkshire town.

From new entertainment facilities worth millions of pounds to road links working to improve connections within the town.

1. Campus @ Northallerton – Treadmills development

Kicking things off is the brand new, multi-million pound education campus on the site of the former prison in Northallerton.

The campus is part of the University of Sunderland and aims to offer a range of short courses for people who don’t have the time or need for a full undergraduate or postgraduate qualification.

The site will also offer higher and degree apprenticeships, as well as free “taster” sessions, aimed at showcasing the courses on offer.

It will work alongside the new Centre for Digital Innovation on the Treadmills site and has benefitted from £675,000 allocated by the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

2. Everyman cinema – Treadmills development

Also coming to Northallerton, thanks to the Treadmills development, is a new Everyman Cinema.

The cinema, which will be open every day,  boasts four screens with a total of 276 seats, a restaurant and bar, and will show mainstream, classic and independent films.

Work started on the cinema in September 2021 and has been steadily progressing with a planned opening date of this summer.

The cinema is one of the latest phases in the £17 million Treadmills scheme.

Council Leader Mark Robson, said it was “a really exciting” to announce the “build of a new cinema just as we begin to emerge from a global pandemic,” back in August last year.

He added at the time: “I am confident the cinema will be a welcome addition and help increase our leisure offer in Northallerton meaning more people can enjoy spending more time in our thriving county town."

3. Northallerton link road and bridge

This £12 million development will join two new developments at Northallerton currently separated by the Northallerton to Middlesbrough railway line and Brompton Beck.

Sadly it was revealed in March that there was an “indefinite delay” on the development, even after construction work is completed.

Originally there were reports that the bypass and bridge would be completed in sprint 2021 after being delayed from an initial opening date of spring 2019.

4. Trees in planters – Northallerton High Street

New images captured by the D&S Times show the new trees in planters that have been constructed on the town’s high street.

The scheme is aimed at improving and enhancing the centre of Northallerton and began earlier last year.

Tree pits and repaving has also taken place on the High Street and aims to make it a more attractive open space with new seating areas, better paving, and more trees, flowers and plants.

It is thought the new space will provide a more useable area for events, festivals, activities and art and culture.

New images of the High Street show the completed planters with seating as many enjoyed the sunshine yesterday, possibly fooling some into thinking they were on holiday.

5. Zetland Street – leading to Treadmills

New pictures captured by the D&S Times show Zetland Street completed as part of its restructure to support the Treadmills development in Northallerton.

The street features new wider footpaths paved from York stone and new trees planted to make it more visually appealing.

The road was narrowed to allow for the wider footpath and fresh tarmac has been laid over the surface to allow a smoother ride for drivers.

6. Northallerton Inn - Northallerton former Police Station

The former Northallerton Police Station is set to be transformed into a bar and hotel as part of a multi-million pound development set to bring a “fresh, new addition to the high street.”

The Northallerton Inn is set to serve up drinks, food and offer customers rooms that will be open daily with food served from 7.30am until 9.00pm.

As well as being an eatery and bar, the building also has 30 bedrooms, including the former custody suite where builders had to deal with reinforced walls and repurpose jail cells.
