CHANCELLOR and Richmond MP Rishi Sunak is said to have been in the cabinet room where a ‘birthday party’ was allegedly held for Boris Johnson during lockdown.

A spokesperson for Mr Sunak said: "The Chancellor went round to the cabinet room for a covid strategy committee meeting, which was being held in the same room."

Kay Burley questionned the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps about the 'party' during an interview on Sky News.

The event is one of the gatherings being investigated by Civil Servant Sue Gray.  Ms Burley said Mr Sunak was present at the 'party' in the Cabinet Office when a birthday cake is understood to have been presented to the Prime Minister, along with his wife Carrie Johnson and their interior designer Lulu Lytle. It was held on June 19, 2020, when social gatherings indoors were restricted.

Mr Shapps said: “Everyone who works in the building will have been in meetings constantly with the Prime Minister including Rishi Sunak.”

The BBC said a source had told them that the Chancellor was also in the room, but had arrived at the end to attend a meeting rather than being invited.

The Metropolitan Police say they have launched an investigation into parties held in No 10 during the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said they were looking into "potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations" in Downing Street and Whitehall since 2020.
