MATCH of the day in the Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination quarter finals was the tie between Durham Ox, Northallerton and Sportsman’s, Northallerton.

After four minutes, Aaron Ramsbottom gave Sporty’s the lead, and eight minutes later, Ox’s Reece Bickerton injured his ankle going into a tackle and had to leave the field injured. His challenge gave away a penalty to Sporty’s.

Ox keeper Dylan Bradford made a great save from Colin Anderson’s penalty. Five minutes before half time Ox’s Chris Hope challenged for a header and received an elbow in the face from one of his own players. He had to leave the field and later was diagnosed with a broken jaw.

Three minutes into the second half Anderson scored to make it 2-0 Sporty’s. Two minutes later Luke Toman was sent off for violent conduct. On 58 minutes, Sporty’s Jack Stapley put his team 3-0 up when he chipped the ball over Bradford to score a great goal. On 65 minutes, Ox’s Rob Frazer went in for a tackle with Stapley who skipped by the tackle, however, Frazer fell awkwardly and has broken his leg.

As he couldn’t be moved from the pitch until an ambulance arrived, the referee abandoned the game with Sportsman’s 4-0 up. The result will probably stand but will be confirmed at this week’s League Council Meeting.

Second division Golden Lion, Northallerton hosted first division Cowtons and won 4-3. Eddy Thornborough gave Lion a first half lead after 16 minutes. Two quick second half goals from Ben Wood and George Fawcett put Lion 3-0 up. Mark Sims scored on 57 minutes for Cowtons. Josh Watson restored Lion’s three goal advantage after 75 minutes and they looked to be coasting to an easy win, however, Cowtons scored two quick goals through James Stanger and Scott Ryan to produce a tense finish with Lion holding on to go through to the semi-finals.

First division Stokesley Wanderers visited second division Catterick Rovers and had a resounding 9-0 win. James Stinson led the Stokesley scorers with four goals followed by a brace from Callum Gowans and further goals from Liam Watson, Ryan Dunn and Jack Johnston.

In division one, second-placed Catterick Village hosted seventh placed Sessay Cricket Club and won 5-0 with a hat trick from Brandon Gredziak and further goals from Luke Hamilton and Shane Parkinson. The win takes Catterick to the top of the league as previous leaders Stokesley Wanderers were in cup action.

Eighth placed Kildale hosted fifth placed Streetlam Farmers and won 5-3. Nick Lappin gave Kildale the lead after 15 minutes. Ryan Monaghan-White equalised for Streetlam five minutes later. Tom Barley put Streetlam ahead on 40 minutes. Sam Sonley equalised for Kildale after half time, and Owen Davies put Kildale ahead on 65 minutes. Zander Smith made it 4-2 Kildale on 70 minutes and James Warwick scored a fifth for Kildale five minutes later. Sam Turnbull scored a third for Streetlam on 80 minutes. The win moves Kildale up to fifth in the table with Streetlam dropping down a place to sixth.

The Knayton versus Robert Thompson’s game was postponed as Thompson’s have resigned from the league.

In division two, league leaders Kirklington hosted fifth-placed Oddies, WMC, N’ton and won 5-0 with a brace from James Newcombe and further goals from Dean Donachie, Lucas Gray and Guy Keeble.

Sixth-placed Catterick Garrison Football Centre hosted second placed Shorthorn, South Otterington and won 2-1 in a hard-fought game. Jacie Hall gave Garrison the lead after 21 minutes. Ryan Lowe made it 2-0 Garrison on 74 minutes. Tom Wilford reduced the arrears for Shorthorn on 80 minutes, however, that was the end of the scoring. The result moves Garrison up a place to fifth with Shorthorn remaining second.

Fourth-placed Leeming United visited eighth-placed Academy and won 6-1 with hat tricks from Chris Young and Jerry Opoku. Sam Carter was Academy’s scorer.

Unfortunately on Sunday evening Academy resigned from the league as they are struggling to field a side each week.

White Bear, Bedale hosted Katch, N’ton and won 6-2 with a hat trick from Dan Hare and further goals from Connor Fraser, Mark Cawood and Jacob Bailey. Sam Nidrie and Andrew Osgood scored for Katch.
