A COUNCIL has criticised “vandals” who interfered with information boards at a seafront car park.

Redcar and Cleveland Council said stickers containing information about a new charging policy which came into force at the Majuba Road car park, in Redcar, had been removed causing confusion for motorists.

Charges previously only applied at the car park between May and September, but in April there was a change, with a charge being levied all year round in order to cover the local authority’s maintenance and security costs.

A spokesman said: “As a temporary measure, stickers containing the new charging policy were applied to the existing information boards, which obliterated the out-of-date information and contained clear messaging of the new terms and conditions.

“New information messages were also installed in front of all payment machines.

“Regrettably, last month vandals removed the information stickers on one of the information boards several times, which might have caused some confusion with users of the car park.

“Our officers have continually re-covered any incorrect wording and reissued stickers containing the right information.”

The spokesman said the council was in the process of erecting permanent new information boards at the car park.

He also said any members of the public who may have received a fixed penalty notice from wardens after mistakenly failing to pay as a result of the boards being interfered with had the option of appealing any fine.
