LAST Saturday saw only two first division games played in the newitts.com Beckett Football League with the games at Ryedale Sports Club and Thornton le Dale both postponed owing to the conditions.

All five league games were played in the second division, which is becoming very interesting with seven of the eight top teams all having a great chance of finishing in a promotion position.

Match of the Day in the second division was the clash of the top two, with second-placed Whitby Fishermen's Society Academy entertaining leaders Ryedale SC Reserves, and for the second successive week leaders Ryedale crashed to a defeat on their travels in a hard fought game.

Ryedale took the lead after four minutes. Joe Wood was through on goal but was dispossessed. The ball fell to Dave Daniels, who was brought down in the box and won his team a penalty. Dave Thompson stepped up and sent the 'keeper the wrong way and put Ryedale ahead.

The second half saw the Fisherman have a wind and slope advantage. Early in the second half David Willison equalised, and the Fishermen went ahead through a wind-assisted long range effort by Lewis Coultas, who scored his second for 3-1 moments later.

Man of the match winners were David Willison (Fishermen) and midfielder Dave Daniels (Ryedale SC).

Fourth-placed Amotherby and Swinton entertained lowly Duncombe Park Reserves in a five goal thriller.

Both teams came out of the blocks fighting, but it was Park who went ahead when a penalty was despatched by James King, who doubled their lead with a powerful strike minutes later.

Two minutes before half time and a defensive mix-up let the Amotherby in to pull themselves back into the game with a goal scored by George Peirson

The second half started the same as the first, with both teams going all out, and it was Amotherby who got the first goal, a ball played over the top which their striker Matthew Lock ran on to and slotted home after 55 minutes. Ten minutes later the same happened again. Park’s defence this time pushed up the line, but the referee deemed Lock's strike was onside.

Ryan Gaughan was Amotherby’s man of the match, while centre back Phil Rutter won the Duncombe Park award.
