A FOOTBALL club known for its sausage-themed kits has donated samples to a museum so they can go on public display to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

All five of Bedale AFC's Heck football strips will go on show at the Sunderland Fans Museum, in the former Monkwearmouth Railway Station near the Stadium of Light.

Museum founder Michael Ganley said: "We have a huge collection of football strips and memorabilia from around the world but especially Sunderland and we are delighted to receive this wonderful donation from our friends in Bedale."

The kits include the original sausage shirt, the hot dog kit, the bangers and mash kit that was banned by the Football Association, the veggie carrot kit and the most recent, see-through kit. All kits have one common theme, to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Bedale chairman Martyn Coombs said: "To have our shirts on public display is a first for our club and can only help spread the message of raising awareness of this horrible disease, and if it encourages men to get checked for early signs of prostate cancer, then it has all been worthwhile."

The club's next major fundraising event is planned for Sunday April 10, 2022 at the Bedale Sports Club and Community Centre, when a Simon Grayson Celebrity football team will play Bedale AFC to raise money for prostate cancer and two Bedale children who are overcoming cancer, Alfie Hutchinson and Bailey Cuthbert, who is donating his share to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

The Sunderland Fans Museum Roadshow will be in attendance and will bring a replica FA Cup. It is hoped Paul Butler, Alex Rae and Kevin Phillips might play for the celebrity team.
