NORTHERN Powergrid has provided an update about the electricity shortages caused by Storm Arwen – with the power operator confirming that only 9,700 houses need connecting in the North East and North Yorkshire.

Giving a recent tally of the figures, the company confirmed that their engineers have so far reconnected 230,300 properties across the region out of the 240,000 that were initially impacted when high winds, rain and snow battered the county at the end of last week.

Throughout today, the network operator’s customer support vehicles have continued to travel to communities providing local people with access to hot water, drinks, mobile phone charging and winter warmer packs, with Northern Powergrid reiterating that supporting the affected communities remains their priority.

In the aftermath and continuing impact of Storm Arwen, talk has also turned to financial compensation and costs incurred by customers that have lost power.

Northern Powergrid says that it will provide financial assistance to any domestic customer who was still off supply on November 29, 2021, or later that needs help.

The network operator will also contribute to other reasonably incurred costs on a ‘case-by-case basis’.

A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said: “We continue to make progress restoring customers’ supplies, but the network operator still has much to do as a result of the scale of the devastation to parts of its network.

“Advice remains that customers continue with alternative arrangements, wherever possible, like staying with family or friends until their power can be safely restored.

“Northern Powergrid is reminding people of the welfare support it is offering to support reasonable accommodation and costs for domestic customers.
