The Met Office have said that “severe weather” could hit the North East after they issued a yellow warning for rain on the outskirts of the region.

The warning is currently in place from midnight tomorrow until 6am on Thursday morning and will bring with it “heavy rain” which may lead to local flooding.

Although the warning does not affect a large part of the North East and North Yorkshire, the Met Office have said “this does not mean areas outside the warning area will not see severe weather.”

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “The Met Office National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS) warns of the potential impacts caused by severe weather and the likelihood of those impacts occurring.

“More extreme impacts are expected within the warning zone, therefore although much of the North East and North Yorkshire outside the warning area this does not mean you will escape the rain completely.”

The Met Office also explained that these weather warnings may update over the coming days so it’s best to keep an eye out.

Here’s what to expect with a yellow rain warning:

  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
