MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, Simon Clarke held a surgery in the café at Morrisons supermarket in Guisborough to meet his constituents, just seven days on from the killing of fellow Conservative politician Sir David Amess.
Cleveland Police were on hand, however, to ensure everyone stayed safe after the incident in Essex in which Sir David was stabbed to death at a constituency surgery.
Mr Clarke chose last Thursday, Market Day in Guisborough, so he could see as many people as possible.
The MP, who is also Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: “I’m here at Morrisons Café in Guisborough today meeting constituents and talking about their issues. The team here (at Morrisons) have been really friendly when I’m looking for a venue in central Guisborough, which allows me to meet people easily. This is a logical place to come and I’d like to thank Mandy (Shutt) and the team for being such good hosts.”
Ms Shutt added: “We wanted to use our café as a community café and invite people in from the wider community to come in for different social groups, including MPs, as well as groups like the Age UK. We are open to suggestions from any groups outside Morrisons to come in and use our café for meetings.”
