LED by Rotarian Sam Forsyth, members of the satellite e-club of Barnard Castle are organising an evening of music and food in aid of a clean water project in Africa.

The Kipsaina scheme aims to help fund and deliver rainwater harvesting systems and sanitation to schools around the margin of the greater Saiwa Swamp wetland in western Kenya.

Sam said: “Access to clean water is a basic human right. We are working with award winning Kenyan community conservationist, Maurice Wanjala, to increase access to clean water in western Kenyan schools.

"We are aiming to train three building teams in interlocking stabilised soil block (ISSB) technology producing bricks, largely from compressed earth.

"These will be used to build rainwater harvesting tanks in eight schools and the potential for many more in the future.

"Alongside the rainwater tanks we will fund local manufacturing of hand washing stations in each school, contributing to a reduction in water-borne disease.”

Emma Fisk’s highly acclaimed Hot Club du Nord gypsy jazz quartet will provide the entertainment and, to continue the Gallic theme, French based food will be served during the interval, with French wines and beers available to purchase. There will also be a raffle at the event, from 7pm on Friday, November 19 at St Mary’s Parish Hall, Newgate.

Tickets cost £15, which includes food, from www.ticketsource.co.uk/bcrotary/t-mlkkge
