He then gave a false name to a railway official in a further bid to avoid paying for the journey.

The case was sent to North Yorkshire Magistrates Court sitting at York on October 8 where Roberts was proved guilty in his absence.

For each of the two offences - travelling on a railway without paying the fare and giving false information – he was fined £220.

He was also ordered to pay £135.90 in compensation and, along with court costs and charges, the total amount he has to pay came to £788.90.

Roberts, of Clarence Street, Rochdale, was given until November 11, 2021, to pay the amount.
