Mr Royle, originally from Newton Aycliffe, bought his first car – a vintage Lagonda – with £250 left to him when his father died.

From there, he went on to buy and service more cars and his company in Staindrop cared for more than 850 vehicles from around the world.

The Lagonda is sold with Mr Royle's handwritten record of all the work he undertook on it between 1969 and 1971.

Its estimated sale price is between £100,000 and £150,000 when it goes to auction in the Motor Car, Motorcycle and Automobilia Sale at Tennants on October 16.

Lagonda was one of the most prestigious marques of the late 1920s; their cars regularly won at Le Mans, and the 3 Litre version is often praised by enthusiasts as being one of the finest Lagondas commercially produced.
