TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known Richmond resident and author.

Charles Barclay Simpson, known as Barclay, of Bargate, died in hospital on August 24 aged 67.

Barclay was well-known in the town for promoting Richmond by building links with other Richmonds elsewhere in the world.

As well as running the Richmonds of the World website, he was the author of a book with the same title.

Marcia McLuckie, chair of the Original Richmond Business and Tourism Association, who knew Barclay well, said: "“I had known Barclay for many years and was most sad to hear of his sudden death.

"He cared deeply about Richmond and had many ideas for events in the town and how to promote its beauty and history. I shall miss seeing him around town.

"Members of the business and tourism association send condolences to his family.”

Richmondshire district and county councillor, Helen Grant, described Barclay as a character.

"Barclay was well known by many people through Richmondshire, but more so in Richmond where he was regularly seen passing round fliers and telling folk what was going on.

"He constantly praised Richmond giving up great swathes of his time to promote the town.

"He produced a book about all the Richmond’s of the world of which he was very proud.

"I for one will miss bumping into him – characters are hard to find these days and he certainly was one."

Richmond town councillor and former mayor, Lorraine Hodgson, also paid tribute to Barclay.

"Everyone you talk to has a story about Barclay. He was a very endearing person and his death is very sad."

A private family funeral service for Barclay will take place at St Agatha's Church, Easby, on Friday, September 24 at 11am.

It will be followed by private cremation.

For those wanting to pay their respects to Barclay, the hearse will pass through Richmond Market Place at approximately 10.30am.

Donations if desired in cheque form for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance or St Agatha's Church, Easby, may be sent care of John Blenkiron & Sons, 21 Queens Road, Richmond, DL10 4AJ.
