Ripon Motor Club. Trial, Braisty Woods, Summerbridge.

NOTE the name Braisty Woods, because it is one of the most spectacular trials venues in the North. Acres of land complete with huge rocky outcrops bordering its north boundary, with smooth grassland that would form a massive car park.

Across a minor road are more acres of shrub land and trees complete with even more natural rock formations.

On Sunday Ripon Motor Club made its second visit to the Summerbridge estate to stage its second trial at the venue.

Event secretary Sarah Laws logged in 134 competitors, who were divided into six classes. The format was a hard, green and easy section choice with youth and over 40s integrated in classes.

The over 40s ran on the easy route. The opening sections were in the parc ferme and a further six further on the opposite side of the lane closed the lap. That area was a track through the undergrowth about a couple of metres wide.

The leading lights in national youth trials were on duty – Harry and George Hemingway plus Scorpa front runner Harry Turner, and progressing rapidly, Charlie Cripps.

Sunday morning was bright and sunny. The opening four sections on the rock escarpment in the paddock were bone dry with just a little green moss to catch the unwary.

The sixth section half a mile down the field stopped Charlie Smith and Jack Challoner. From that section the fun started as the field entered the "jungle" to locate the sections. Nancy Laws was at the final treble switchback rocks and those big steps punished any half-hearted attack.

Harry Hemingway demonstrated his style well as did Scorpa’s Harry Turner, who started the day badly with a first section, first lap five. Gas rig engineer Roger Williams headed the over 40s green contenders and Phillip Hammond took the easy class on a clean sheet.
