ONE of North Yorkshire’s best known landmarks has gone on the market with a price tag of £500,000.
Lake Gormire at the foot of Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, comes with 53 acres of woodland and additional sporting rights over 107.5 acres of adjacent farmland.
The view looking west over the lake, which is now a popular wild swimming location, has been described by James Herriot author Alf Wight as the “best view in England”.
Potential buyers should probably not be of a superstitious nature as there are many folklore stories surrounding Gormire, including that the lake is bottomless, and that it contains the entrance to hell.
The lake, which has no streams feeding it and so very little current, is being sold by agents Savills.
