The LONG-ESTABLISHED Richmond-based classical music society has appointed Chris Shaw as its new chairman.

Chris has been a trustee of the society for the last five years. Originally from Leeds, he taught physics before moving to Richmond. He enjoys playing the double bass in chamber groups, small ensembles and symphony orchestras, and has even built a double bass of his own.

Founded more than 70 years ago, Richmondshire Concerts normally puts on six high-quality, professional concerts each year, in a season from September to April. This last season was unusual with no concerts, so no members! However, the society recently staged a socially-distanced two-concert Summer Mini-Season for audiences starved of live classical music.

Now the society is planning to return to normal, with a full complement of concerts booked for its 74th season.

Chris said: “I'm very much looking forward to helping steer the trustees in their work to maintain and increase the exceptional quality and variety of music that we provide.

"Richmondshire Concerts punches well above its weight in the chamber music world, and I know that we can all look forward to another great season from September onwards.”

Retiring chairman Nick Reckert, who held the role for nearly seven years, said: “It’s been a real privilege to work with such a good team, with star musicians, and with our wonderful and enthusiastic audiences.

"I hope Chris gets as much pleasure out of it as I have had.” Nick will remain on the society's board.

The Richmondshire Concerts return to Richmond on September 29. Details of the concerts and of membership will be at www.rsconcerts.org.
