BEN Brown of Snape, near Bedale, was selected to represent Yorkshire in the English Schools' Golf Association's North Regional Championship at Sleaford in Lincolnshire on May 28.

In a very strong field, Ben got off to an excellent start with three birdies in his first five holes, reaching the turn at four under par. The back nine saw him drop just one shot but two further birdies saw him finish with a splendid score of 66, six under par.

This gave him a victory by four clear strokes, qualifying him comfortably for the National Schools' Championship, which will take place at Belton Park, also in Lincolnshire, this month. It also puts him among the leaders in the prestigious Telegraph Junior Golf Championship qualifying list.

The top players in that list will play a final at Walton Heath Golf Club in the autumn, sponsored by Justin Rose. Year 11 student Ben missed his official leaving day at Bedale High School to take part in this event.

Golf runs in the family, with his elder brother Dan the 2016 English Amateur Champion and now a professional golfer attached to Romanby Golf Club. Dan also played an English Schools' Championship at Belton Park, with a strong finish earning him an international cap against Scottish Schools in 2009. Both have had their successes as members of Masham Golf Club.
