A 17-YEAR-old has launched her very own pet treats business.

Louise McGill, 17, of Guisborough, has launched Posh Paws Bakery, a new business that specialises in making homemade dog treats.

The Level 3 Animal Management student found inspiration to bake canine treats after studying animal nutrition on her course at Askham Bryan College at Stewart Park in Middlesbrough.

From what she learned at college, paired with helping her pooch who sticks to a grain-free diet due to allergies, Louise developed a recipe that has been enjoyed by the toughest of canine critics.

Louise said: “Having previously worked for a dog-boarding company, I had the chance to familiarise myself with a range of dogs, breeds, sizes and ages.

"I noticed that there was a gap in the market for all-natural, preservative-free dog treats, so I tried and tested recipes to formulate the perfect biscuit.”

Louise launched her business in February and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

In addition to her initial customer base, many of who stem from her previous dog-boarding work, she has received orders from across the county, Yorkshire and has even had international interest.

Due to the growing demand, Louise has increased her offering to a variety of five biscuits, ‘pup tarts’ and now canine birthday cakes.

Louise said: “I love animals and always dreamt of being a veterinarian however A-Levels weren’t for me and that understanding animal nutrition was.

"My college course opened the door to what I’m truly passionate about, animal nutrition.

"Going into my second year of the Level 3 course, I hope to build upon that knowledge so I can expand my business and bake delicious and healthy dog treats and products for a living.”

Andrew MacGregor, Programme Manager and Lecturer Animal Management at Askham Bryan College Stewart Park in Middlesbrough, said: “Louise is a hardworking student, who always puts her all into everything that she does.

"She is very passionate about the animal industry, this is made apparent by her focused work ethic.

"She has overcome several challenges in what has been a tough year for many students, but this has not halted her in her drive to make a difference.

"During her time here, Louise studied on our Level 3 Animal Management programme which has allowed her to gain new skills and become work-ready.

"It comes as no surprise that Louise has set up her own business and I am sure that she will be very successful.

"I think I may place an order for my own dogs very soon!”

Louise has set up a Facebook account which already has over 200 followers.

She has also set up an Instagram account for Posh Paws Bakery.

One person on the Facebook account said: "Thank you for the great service!"
