AN 'innovative' tennis club has joined forces with a "sport for good" organisation to offer a new programme to the local community.

Leake Tennis Club in Knayton has secured funding to support disadvantaged adults including those with learning disabilities, behavioural and special educational needs. These individuals have been hit significantly harder due to Covid-19, experiencing disproportionate challenges and difficulty, resulting from having to socially isolate for long periods of time. This has had a huge impact on their mental health and heightened their vulnerability.

The club plans to support these adults by offering them the opportunity to access free weekly adapted multi-sport and tennis sessions designed to get them physically and socially active, and mentally stimulated.

Leake will be supported in the project by Sport Works, a leading "sport for good" organisation. The partnership will see inclusive activities delivered at the club, creating opportunities for many.

Eddie Costello, from Leake Tennis Club, said: "Our project will be able to bring adults with learning disabilities back to community activity, via our club in a safe environment, that will help build back confidence, communication skills and the physical and mental health of those it will support.

"It will help alleviate depression, anxieties, isolation and loneliness currently encountered, whilst offering a feeling of independence or respite for others."

Matt Hill, national development director at Sport Works, added: "We’re delighted to work in partnership with Leake Tennis Club on their innovative programme. It has been such a challenging time for everyone throughout the pandemic so to be able to deliver a positive, inclusive programme for those who have really struggled is excellent."
