NORTH YORKSHIRE’S skies witnessed a type of aerial visitor not seen for a number of years.

A stalwart of the Cold War era, a Hawker Hunter jet aircraft has been spotted flying in and out of RAF Leeming. This visiting aircraft is both owned and operated by Hawker Hunter Aviation Ltd, which although a civilian contractor, operates from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. Their pilots and fleet of aircraft works extensively with the military. The reason for the visit is unknown but it has certainly caused a stir amongst the aviation-loving community. The more discerning locals may have noticed its presence but not any increased engine noise as it is a quiet aircraft.

Originally designed by Sir Sydney Camm, who created the Hurricane, Hawker Hunters flew with the Royal Air Force in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It was the first jet-powered aircraft produced by Hawker to be bought by the RAF. In 1953 it broke the world air speed record for aircraft, achieving 727.63 mph.

It also holds the distinction of being the first and only jet to fly under Tower Bridge. In April 1968 a Hawker Hunter flown by disgruntled RAF pilot Alan Pollock hit the headlines. As a protest against the Government not celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, he buzzed the Houses of Parliament and on impulse flew under Tower Bridge. He was later given a medical discharge rather than an embarrassing Court Martial.
