AN east Cleveland cricket club has knocked objectors for six after winning approval for a raft of improvements.

Moorsholm Cricket and Athletic Club wants to extend its cricket pavilion to create a new front entrance, meeting room and disabled toilet facilities and also plans to add two new all weather practice surfaces.

Members of Redcar and Cleveland Council’s regulatory committee approved the plans unanimously following a recent meeting.

Several objections were raised from nearby addresses primarily over the new all weather surfaces, which will cater for cricket and bowls.

These related to additional noise, a potential loss of privacy and the prospect of more cars restricting parking spaces outside homes.

Another concern was the proximity to an existing child’s play area.

Ward councillor Steve Kay was among those supporting the cricket club and said in a statement: “Since the closure of the public house about five years ago the club has provided the only social venue in the village.

“There is a demand for its facilities from players, supporters and residents alike, with the result that more accommodation is urgently needed.”

Cllr Kay added that young players would be developed further by being able to practice on a suitable surface with mobile nets to be used.

In granting approval members of the committee took into account a condition suggested by planning officers restricting the hours the all-weather surfaces could be used to between 9am and 8pm Monday to Sunday, and not outside of this.

Members also suggested a notice should be placed in the pavilion advising of the times and stating cricket nets should be stored away at the end of any practice sessions.

A report which recommended approval said an existing mature hedgerow would shield immediate views of homes in Guisborough Road and Recreation View from the new surfaces.

It also said that due to the angle of play and the use of enclosed nets it was not considered the cricket surface would create a risk to users of the play area.

The extensions were deemed not likely to increase parking numbers with acceptable parking being provided at the club itself and on the street.
