Students at Durham University have launched a unique, student-led, enterprise, which allows them to manage a real global investment fund, providing skills and credentials to bolster their career prospects

The Durham University Student Investment Fund (DUSIF) is managed entirely by a student team consisting of 25 analysts and advisors appointed by founder and president Tyler Thomas, an economics undergraduate.

The enterprise will not only allow those involved to gain real business experience, but it seeks to create profitable returns from its investments. These will be re-invested to grow the fund, with a portion used to support future generations of students through the Durham Inspired – North-East Scholarships fund.

These Durham Inspired – North-East Scholarships have been specifically designed to support applicants from the North East of England, enhancing the impact of the university locally in the process.

As the fund matures, interested parties will be able to contribute to it and become honorary shareholders. A creative way of supporting both scholarships and career-enhancing opportunities for local students.

Tyler said: “In time I would like DUSIF, and its members, to build a reputation amongst investment professionals as a high-quality organisation that produces talented analysts they’d like to recruit.

“By continuing to develop strong business partnerships with alumni working in the field, we hope to benefit the scholarship fund and help others whilst honing crucial workplace skills.”

Overseen by an alumni-led governance board, DUSIF will be chaired by Durham University alumnus Mark Wharrier, a senior fund manager at Majedie Asset Management, who also hails from the North East.

The vice-chair will be alumnus Kate McGrath, an ESG Analyst concerned with ethical and sustainable investments, at Aberdeen Standard Capital. Olly Bates from the university’s investment manager, Sarasin’s, will also be on the committee along with Dr Thomas Renstrom.
