A FESTIVAL of music and speech that has been on the go for more than 120 years is appealing for volunteers to secure its future.

After cancelling this year's Wensleydale Tournament of Song at the last minute, due to Covid-19, the organisers and fans were left disappointed. Now the Tournament’s Council has made the difficult decision not to proceed with the Tournament for 2021, again because of Covid-19.

Founded in 1898 by the Hon Amias Lucien Orde-Powlett, a relative of the present Lord Bolton, the Wensleydale Tournament of Song was originally a two-day festival. Over the years many from across the district have at one time performed there either as children or adults.

Back in its early days, the contest was first held in a schoolroom but it was deemed “uncomfortably crowded” for contestants so moved to the then town hall now House and Home, where it remained until 1969. It then moved to its present venue of the Methodist Hall and holds its final day at Tennants Garden Rooms.

Since its inception, there have been only two occasions when the Tournament has not been held for two or more consecutive years, both as a result of World Wars. Organisers are now tentatively commencing arrangements and looking forwards to an outstanding Festival in 2022.

The Tournament is looking for any volunteers to join their enthusiastic group of supporters particularly as secretary. The role would require all the usual secretarial and IT skills – initially to help with correspondence but as the next Tournament approaches other areas would require attention.

Its president Val Nelson is keen to continue the traditional festival. She said: “We all know how vitally important it is to keep music alive in the Dales.

“In this respect, the Tournament is such an important event, having taken place since 1898 and being one of the oldest Festivals in the country.

“It has promoted amateur dedication and effort both in music and spoken word to the delight of audiences over many years, with the hope that it will continue to do so for many years to come.”
