DESPITE it being National Road Safety Week, North Yorkshire Police’s traffic officers witnessed several potentially serious incidents.

Patrol officers from the Road Policing Group were drawn to an erratic driver seen drinking from an open bottle of an alcoholic drink. Although he passed the breath test the driver was arrested after failing a drugs test.

In a similar act of drawing attention to himself, a moped rider riding with a mobile phone in one hand was stopped and checked, then arrested after testing positive for drugs.

Speeding has also come to the attention of patrols with one driver clocked at almost 140mph on the A1M.

Meanwhile on the A1 at Catterick on Saturday, the driver of a VW Passat was arrested after testing positive for drugs and for failing to appear in court in Durham. He had no licence or insurance, so the car was seized.

Information from a paramedic resulted in an Audi car being stopped on the A1M after it was seen veering across carriageway. After administering a roadside breath test to the driver, the resultant reading resulted in him being arrested. As he had no driving licence his vehicle was also seized.

And the occupants of an Audi RS 3 that crashed near Harrogate last Saturday were lucky to escape with minor injuries. Officers attending the scene commented that although vehicle was a shadow of its former self, it has done its job with both occupants receiving only minor injuries. They praised members of the public that stopped and offered first aid before the arrival of the emergency services.
