INTREPID fundraisers are celebrating after raising nearly £10,000 for an autism charity by finishing a 162-mile bike ride.

The 19 riders have so far raised £9,793 in aid of North East Autism Society (NEAS) by cycling across four counties between Chester-le-Street and Penrith over the course of two days.

The team was made-up of supporters, sponsors, and NEAS staff members, including CEO John Phillipson, who said: “We’re immensely grateful to everyone who has supported the ride by taking part, sponsoring, donating, or sharing what we did.

“Raising £10,000 was an ambitious target, but we’ve been overwhelmed with the level of support given by individuals and businesses all over the North-East, and it’s wonderful to be approaching our goal.

“This money will now go towards supporting the life-changing work NEAS conducts every day with autistic children, young people, and adults in communities across the region.”

The ride began and ended at the charity’s base in Chester-le-Street, the route forming the shape of the charity’s infinity loop logo, and was sponsored by Gama Systems, BGL, Leathers, Cleardata, Activa, and Challenge Northumberland.

Emily Taylor, corporate social responsibility manager for BGL Group, said: “Our charitable work is a key part of BGL and it’s important to our colleagues to be able to support people in their own communities, and we’re pleased to have been in a position to support NEAS.”
