AN investigation is underway into a fire at a former nightclub in Middlesbrough.

The blaze broke out at the former Slam nightclub, in the town’s Exchange Square at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Firefighters from two Middlebrough crews tackled the flames, which destroyed two rooms, and caused smoke damage to the rest of the disused building, which was previously known the Old Exchange Nightclub.

The fire service called police to the scene at 4.50pm.

An investigation has now been launched.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “We will be working with Cleveland Fire Brigade UK to investigate the circumstances of the fire.

“Any witnesses, including drivers who may have dash cam footage which will assist us, are asked to call Cleveland Police on 101, quoting event number 108975.”

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "Two fire engines attended from Middlesbrough Community Fire Station.

"One hose reel jet, four breathing apparatus, a positive pressure ventilator and thermal image camera were used.

"There was 100 per cent damage to two rooms and 85 per cent smoke damage to the rest of the building.

"The incident is now under joint investigation with Cleveland Police."
