A KEY worker ordered to leave a marina after complaining people were ignoring lockdown has won the backing of her MP who says they have ‘no right' to evict her during the crisis.

Sandra Burgess who lives in a narrowboat moored at Droitwich Marina has also hit out at ‘horrible’ internet ‘trolls’ who have attacked her over what she said says are legitimate complaints about a matter of public health. However, she was grateful to others who have supported her, saying: “I’ve done nothing wrong.”

The 48-year-old key worker, who works at an after school club near Worcester, received notice to leave the marina by July 9 after she lodged several complaints about people breaching social distancing rules at the marina. Lucy Lermer, office manager of Droitwich MP Nigel Huddleston wrote: “The Government have made it absolutely clear that during the coronavirus pandemic, no renter can be evicted from a property.”

She went on to share a link to Government policy and added: “You should send this link to the manager and the owner of the marina so that they properly understand that they have no right to evict you at the present time.”

She went on to write: “Because of this I suggest that you continue to seek alternative marinas for your boat and car which hopefully will be opening up soon to new entrants, so that you can find a more pleasant place to live.

“As I said, Nigel very much appreciates key workers such as yourself who have worked throughout this pandemic and helped keep our community going. In addition you are also clearly concerned that the lockdown restrictions are properly applied to help keep us all safe, and we thank you for this.”

Ms Burgess said: “I have had some great support from some people on the marina but others have taken to social media and have been completely awful.”

She says they feel ‘they can do want they want and it’s my own fault for complaining’. She added: “It is so isolating. They are behaving as if the coronavirus stops at the main gate and they, their family, and friends are immune to it.”

As a single woman she is worried about how she will navigate all the locks by herself and has started to plan how she will be able to live and work while living full time on the canal path. She said: “I’m finding my mood is very low and I know it's going to be hard on my own.”

A marina spokesman said: "Droitwich Spa Marina in these challenging and difficult times for everyone is following Government and Canal and River Trust advice and guidance.

"With the easing of the restrictions we look forward to the reopening of the canals and river system for everyone to enjoy.
