TRIBUTES have been paid by Community Action supporters to their longest serving volunteer who has passed away aged 90.

George Cobby originally started volunteering with Hambleton Community Action when it was Northallerton and District Voluntary Service Association over 30 years ago.

Working with a handful of other volunteers, including June Darrah, he helped provide support with a wide range of services including assistance to people with gardening, decorating and maintenance. Through volunteering he drove over 150,000 miles providing journeys for people through the community car scheme all of which he meticulously documented. Mr Cobby passed away on Tuesday May 5.

Claire Barnbrook Community Car Scheme Co-ordinator said "George was a true gentleman. He would always ring a client the night before and introduce himself, escort people to their appointment and help them however he could. Nothing seemed to phase him. He also enjoyed coming into the office for a chat and a cuppa. George was a popular member of the community and helped so many people over the years, he will be sorely missed."
