CHILDREN at a Richmondshire primary school are appealing for donations of wildflower seeds so they can fill a meadow and bring a little bit of joy to local residents.

Teaching assistant Tracey Kirby said Barton CE Primary School's pupil Eco Warriors, Jack, Freya, Ruby and Alfie, started work on the meadow before the school was largely closed due to coronovirus.

Ms Kirby said: "The four school Eco Warriors have a very active role in keeping the school eco-friendly. A few years ago we made a bug hotel, and I thought it would be a great idea to plant wildflowers in a small meadow around it to encourage more bees and insects.

"We got some seeds but not nearly enough to fill the space."

Year 5 student Jack, whose parents are both paramedics, said he would love to be able to see the flowers grow.

He said: "It is a good job to be an Eco Warrior. We make sure the recycling is taken out and lights are turned off.

"We are asking if people have any spare seeds they would like to donate to us for our meadow.

"In return, we promise to send photographs of the progress of the field as the flowers grow. We think it would make the village look pretty and it will make people happy to see it."
