A HEAD girl has completely reorganised the way students help run the school.

When 17-year-old Emily Scott was appointed head girl at Wensleydale School and Sixth Form earlier in the school year, she was determined that student representation was going to change.

After running her ideas past the school’s senior management, she was given the green light to go ahead. The next step was giving an informative presentation to every year group with details of the application process, which was open to all.

Along with the assistant head, all applicants went through a stringent interview with Emily. Finally after some deliberation, a deputy along with five assistants were chosen to form the school’s student representation body.

Emily said: “We are now a meaningful group where students now have a say in the running of the school.”

The new body acts as a conduit for student opinions and gives feedback to the school’s management on any planned changes or procedures they feel aren’t working. They were involved in the choice of the school’s new uniform.

The team is Lydia Allison, Alfie Bilsborough, Caitlin Howard, Willow Mason, Nick O’ Keefe and Philip Walton.

Headteacher Julia Polley said: “Emily has transformed student voice, she has demonstrated leadership skills and ensured student interests are presented to the senior leadership team regularly.

“Recently we had considered changing the library into a social space and removing the books to the English department. Emily was fiercely in opposition and through a series of meetings convinced us to think of an alternative. We now have a fully staffed library at lunchtime. Emily makes sure we listen.”
