Artists, Illness and Creativity

RETIRED country doctor, James Grant, shares his passion for medicine, its history and its relationship to art and artists at Tennants Garden Rooms, Leyburn on March 10, from 2-3pm.

He argues that both physical disability and mental health issues can affect the creative process, acting as a stimulus but also as a major modifying influence on an artist’s perception of the world.

This lecture seeks to explore this relationship in artists such as Durer, Goya, Monet and Kahlo endeavouring to understand better how disability influenced their genius.

Dr Grant, a popular Arts Society lecturer, has spent his working life in the NHS both in hospital and in rural practice and draws upon his professional expertise in a stimulating and informative way.
