THERE is an impressive comedy line-up at an event in the Dales this spring.

Britain’s Got Talent winner Lost Voice Guy (Lee Ridley) heads the Comedy Night event at the Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn on March 6.

The comedian took the nation by storm to be named winner in 2018, and has a string of awards and national television and radio credits to his name.

He not only faces his disability – cerebral palsy – head-on, but makes it part of his stand-up routine. He said: “I’m a struggling stand-up comedian who also struggles to stand up.”

He won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014. Other credits include America’s Got Talent, Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance and Comedy Central at The Comedy Store. He is also co-writer with Kathering Jakeways of the BBC Radio 4 series, Ability, which was nominated for the Writers Guild of Great Britain Award for radio comedy.

The show at the increasingly popular Garden Rooms will be hosted by Sam Harland, another comedian whose rise on the comedy circuit and a talent for making people laugh, was also born of disadvantage, albeit of a different kind.

Sam spent much of his childhood in poverty in Hull, left school at 14, turned to drugs and spent time in rehab before finding his vocation as a comedian, drawing on his life experience to raise people’s spirits by making them laugh.

Like Lee Ridley, he is also an inspirational speaker and supporter of various charities and organisations. In an interview with HullLive, Sam said: “The rehab kept me alive. I went to uni and started doing my stand up all over the country.”

Nina Gilligan and Jack Gleadow complete the exciting line-up. Nina was hugely popular with the audience at the comedy night in Aysgarth last summer, organised by Anita Watson, whose Dales Events is co-producing the latest Leyburn show with Tennants. There will be a raffle on the night for Breast Cancer Care, Anita’s chosen charity, for which she raised £55,000 in 18 months in 2018-19.

The event starts at 8pm (doors open at 7pm). Tickets are £15 (over-18s only) available from Garden Rooms reception, by calling 01969 621146, at info@tennantsgardenrooms.com or from Tennants website.
