A FESTIVAL of music and speech that has been on the go for over 120 years is appealing for volunteers to ensure its future.

Founded in 1898 by the Hon. Amias Lucien Orde-Powlett, a relative of the present Lord Bolton, the Wensleydale Tournament of Song was originally a two-day festival. Over the years many young and not so young people from across the district have at one time performed there.

Back in its early days the contest was first held in a schoolroom but it was deemed “uncomfortably crowded” for contestants so moved to the town hall now House and Home, where it remained until 1969. It then moved to its present venue of the Methodist Hall and holds its final day at Tennants Garden Rooms.

The Tournament is entirely run by a team of hard-working volunteers headed by its President Val Nelson. She said: “The Tournament has a team of volunteers many of whom have been with us for a number of years and have indicated they wish to retire next year.

“Being involved in the Tournament is very enjoyable and rewarding and it isn’t necessary to have a musical background.”

The tasks at the two week festival include: stewarding, helping to chaperone contestants and associated administration work.

Now a two-week event, The Wensleydale Tournament of Song attracts highly-talented or keen performers both adults or young people. Entrants are marked and critiqued on their performance by professional and honest adjudicators.

Performances vary during the first week from humorous recitals, to poetry or Shakespeare; some are self-composed. For the second (music) week you can expect to see a range of diverse musical acts from solo acts, groups to full choirs. Many schools, musical organisations and individuals also participate.

The dates for the forthcoming contest are Monday, March 16 to Friday 20 inclusive for speech. The second week for music is Monday, March 23 to Friday 27. Prospective volunteers should contact Mrs Nelson on 01677 450227.
